Possible Causes of Poor Circulation

Research has indicated that if you have poor circulation in your feet, it may be indicative of other medical conditions. These may include diabetes, heart conditions, and obesity. It is defined as restricted blood flow to the lower extremities, and there are often noticeable symptoms that are associated with this condition. These can consist of numbness, tingling, and muscle cramps, in addition to pain and discomfort. Nerve damage can possibly be caused by poor circulation, in addition to varicose veins and blood clots. Patients may find relief when specific exercises are performed, and compression stockings are worn that are designed for painful, swollen legs. If you feel you have symptoms of this condition, it is advised that you consult with a podiatrist to learn about the best treatment options for you.

While poor circulation itself isn’t a condition; it is a symptom of another underlying health condition you may have. If you have any concerns with poor circulation in your feet contact Dr. Ronald Sheppard of Warren-Watchung Podiatry Center. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Poor Circulation in the Feet

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) can potentially lead to poor circulation in the lower extremities. PAD is a condition that causes the blood vessels and arteries to narrow. In a linked condition called atherosclerosis, the arteries stiffen up due to a buildup of plaque in the arteries and blood vessels. These two conditions can cause a decrease in the amount of blood that flows to your extremities, therefore resulting in pain.

Symptoms

Some of the most common symptoms of poor circulation are:

  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Throbbing or stinging pain in limbs
  • Pain
  • Muscle Cramps

Treatment for poor circulation often depends on the underlying condition that causes it. Methods for treatment may include insulin for diabetes, special exercise programs, surgery for varicose veins, or compression socks for swollen legs.

As always, see a podiatrist as he or she will assist in finding a regimen that suits you. A podiatrist can also prescribe you any needed medication.

Where Do Plantar Warts Grow?

A plantar wart typically grows into the skin on the bottom of the foot. This is a result of pressure that is endured by standing and walking for majority of the day. They are caused by the HPV virus and can appear on the heel or on the sole of the foot under the toes. This type of virus is considered to be contagious, and it is beneficial to wear appropriate shoes while in specific environments. These can include public swimming pools, shower room floors, locker rooms, and surrounding areas. Plantar warts can cause severe pain and discomfort, and it is often difficult to walk. If you are afflicted with a plantar wart, it is advised that you speak with a podiatrist.

Plantar warts can be very uncomfortable. If you need your feet checked, contact Dr. Ronald Sheppard from Warren-Watchung Podiatry Center. Our doctor will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

About Plantar Warts

Plantar warts are the result of HPV, or human papillomavirus, getting into open wounds on the feet. They are mostly found on the heels or balls of the feet.

While plantar warts are generally harmless, those experiencing excessive pain or those suffering from diabetes or a compromised immune system require immediate medical care. Plantar warts are easily diagnosed, usually through scraping off a bit of rough skin or by getting a biopsy.

Symptoms

  • Lesions on the bottom of your feet, usually rough and grainy
  • Hard or thick callused spots
  • Wart seeds, which are small clotted blood vessels that look like little black spots
  • Pain, discomfort, or tenderness of your feet when walking or standing

Treatment

  • Freezing
  • Electric tool removal
  • Laser Treatment
  • Topical Creams (prescription only)
  • Over-the-counter medications

To help prevent developing plantar warts, avoid walking barefoot over abrasive surfaces that can cause cuts or wounds for HPV to get into. Avoiding direct contact with other warts, as well as not picking or rubbing existing warts, can help prevent the further spread of plantar warts. However, if you think you have developed plantar warts, speak to your podiatrist. He or she can diagnose the warts on your feet and recommend the appropriate treatment options.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact one of our offices located in Marlboro and Watchung, NJ . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

If any existing wounds become infected, they can progress to a foot ulcer. If it is left untreated, it may lead to amputation. There are methods that can be implemented which may help to reduce the possibility of an infection. These can include properly trimming the toenails, and performing a daily foot check to look for cuts or blisters. If you are diabetic, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can help you to manage your diabetic condition.
