How to Tell if Your Child Has Experienced Foot or Ankle Trauma

If your child has pain, swelling, or immobility in their foot or ankle—or the foot or ankle has become misshapen, you notice bruising or broken skin—they may have suffered foot or ankle trauma. It is important to make an appointment right away with a podiatrist who will conduct a thorough examination and may perform or prescribe various diagnostic tests such as an X-ray, bone scan, CT Scan, or MRI. If your child has experienced a break or fracture, your podiatrist may use a splint or cast to allow the area to heal. Medications may be used to reduce pain, and treat or ward off any possible infection. If the trauma is severe, your child may need surgical intervention to put the bones back into place. It is important to follow your podiatrist’s care and recovery plans to help your child heal properly and get them back on their feet as quickly as possible.

The health of a child’s feet is vital to their overall well-being. If you have any questions regarding foot health, contact Dr. Ronald Sheppard of Warren-Watchung Podiatry Center. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Tips for Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

  • Make sure their shoes fit properly
  • Look for any signs of in-toeing or out-toeing
  • Check to see if they have Clubfoot (condition that affects your child’s foot and ankle, twisting the heel and toes inward) which is one of the most common nonmajor birth defects.
  • Lightly cover your baby’s feet (Tight covers may keep your baby from moving their feet freely, and could prevent normal development)
  • Allow your toddler to go shoeless (Shoes can be restricting for a young child’s foot)
  • Cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails
  • Keep your child’s foot clean and dry
  • Cover cuts and scrapes. Wash any scratches with soap and water and cover them with a bandage until they’ve healed.
